I. Charming Country Home[]

"Seven years wore gracefully on the aged landmarks of the town. The same brown fields rolled away to the east, the same unaltered clumps of trees waved their majestic heads, and the neat road wound its solitary way through the familiar flora. A fresh coat of paint was the only noticeable change in the rambling white house that leaned so comfortably on the topography but that grand old apple tree insured the antique atmosphere of the view from the road. The lawns were a little nicer than they had been seven years ago and to a careful observer the house and grounds had made the easy step from an old farm house to a charming country home. This had been accomplished mainly by the introduction of modern conveniences, enlarging the flower garden, hiding the function of the necessary things, and glorifying those objects that had fallen to desuetude."
