"Once this branch of humanity achieved a certain level of technical prowess, and watched starships sail off for other worlds, the challenge for those left behind was how to live in balance with the planet. One solution was to construct city-sized islands that cruised the currents of their world. Imagine being able to pick up shipped goods right where they are made. Imagine the efficiency of travel when you can sit still for a couple weeks but end up on the far side of the planet. All these things came to life in the floating cities."
