"The sharp freezing wind whistles through the creaks and crevasses that surround The Great Mountains of Saft. Through the cracks in the clouds sunlight bleeds through, showering those fortunate enough to be in its presence in a pool of its colourful beauty and helping those entranced get even a momentary break from the chaos engulfing the world around them.
Before ‘The Merge Phenomenon’ began The Great Mountains were part of a sacred passage through the Solverse by one of its oldest faiths - The Communion of the Children of the Eight Divines - believed by them to be a test from the god of willpower himself, Zenos. To pass through The Great Mountains successfully is to prove your strength to the Eight Divines, which in return will provide you, your family and your community temporary safety from the wrath of the Gods. Since The Merge The Great Mountains of Saft have become more than just a place of pilgramige, acting as a beaming beacon of hope to those lost in the chaos encapsulating the world around them."
II. A Compliment for Jack[]

"After dinner Mr. and Mrs. Van Sycle went as usual to enjoy the sunset from their chairs on the lawn and Charmian and Jack went off to look about the farm. Van Sycle seemed rather taken with the young man who, quiet and sky at first, soon seemed to find himself at ease. When Charmian's eyes were on him especially he talked volubly and showed not only creditable judgment for a young man but an inordinate amount of information.
""That's the most interesting young man Charmian ever had out here,"" John said to his wife between puffs at his pipe."
