"Charmian and Jack passed down the path and around the barns and yard, joking and laughing about the various things and talking all the time, often both at the same time. They looked at all the horses and their many ribbons and climbed up on one of the barns to get a good look at the surrounding country. They slowly ambled back to the house where Charmian played a few things on the piano while Jack looked absently through some magazines and hoped she would stop playing and sit beside him. In good time she satisfied his wish but sat far across the room and partly looked off out the long, low window. She seemed to have lost her vitality, she was tired and seemed almost to forget his presence. "
