"Townsend was not seen at the Van Sycle farm again that weekend and his absence was beyond their understanding. He met Charmian and Jack Lawrence as he had promised Saturday morning but during the long, hard ride he stayed well out in front and seldom spoke. His reticence was not noticed due to the furiousness of the pace and the wide gaps between the members of the party when they stopped for a walk."
