I. Aunt Jane's Dinner Party[]

"Charmian made herself at home. The house was finished with all simplicity and good taste yet equipped with every known mechanical convenience. It was not a large house and the work was easily managed by one maid and a cook. There were few house guests but the table was well known and entertaining at dinner was a pleasure that friends never discouraged. The best obtainable wines were served at these dinners, just as they had been served at Aunt Jane's father's table many years before and drunkenness was just as opprobrious as it had been in the older days. The dinner party was delightful. And even later that evening, a young man unmindful of his advance approached Aunt Jane and said, ""If you have some sort of gramophone we might dance a bit."" Aunt Jane was as startled by the remark as by a bombshell. ""I am sorry,"" she said looking coldly at him and biting off her words, ""I have no gramophone down here."
